"It is unlike any event you will ever attend. It is the 'Sisterhood of the Pink.' On one hand, you're kind of angry at the reason everyone has gathered. But, on the other hand, it really is a joyous event. The cancer survivors are celebrating every year of life and those that love and support them are celebrating with them."
A breast exam by a trained medical professional should be part of your regular medical checkup.
The Madison Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1998 by Pam Jameson and a handful of supporters. In seven short years, the Madison Race has generated net proceeds of more than $1,000,000 for local and national breast cancer research, education, screening, and treatment programs in Dane County and across the country. Race participation has increased from 3,000 to 10,000 runners and is projected to reach 11,000 for our 11th anniversary.
Twenty-three years ago in Peoria, Illinois, Susan Goodman Komen, a beautiful mother of two, died of breast cancer at the age of 36. Before she died, her sister, Nancy Goodman Brinker, made a promise to Susan that somehow she would make it better for other women diagnosed with the disease. In 1982, Nancy G. Brinker fulfilled her promise and established the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Today, the Foundation is an international organization with a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working through local Affiliates and events like the Komen Race for the Cure® to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. For more information about breast health or breast cancer, please call the Komen Foundation's National Toll Free Breast Cancer Health Line at 1-800-I'M AWARE® (1-800-462-9273), or visit their website at www.komen.org.
The Komen Madison Race for the Cure® Affiliate raises funds to provide positive awareness, education and early detection of breast cancer for women throughout Dane County, as well as helping to fund the National Grants program of the Komen Foundation.Since its inception, the Komen Race for the Cure® series has grown from one local Race to 113 Races and 2 international Races with more than 1 million participants in 2003.
