MADISON RACE FOR THE CURE®
DRAWS THOUSANDS TO FIGHT BREAST CANCER
Komen Madison Race Celebrates 8 Years
Madison, WI - June 4, 2005 - Participants at the 2005 Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Madison Race for the Cure® took a bold step in the fight against cancer as they descended on the Willow Island. More than 7,900 runners and walkers, including nearly 700 breast cancer survivors, participated in the 8th annual 5K event in Madison to raise money for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs. More than $300,000.00 will go directly to support the fight against breast cancer.
"The Komen Madison Race for the Cure®, and the thousands of people who participated on Race Day, are powerful testaments to the strength of one and the power of many in the fight to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease," said Susan Braun, president and chief executive officer for the Komen Foundation.
This year's event kicked off with the traditional Pasta Dinner to celebrate and recognize those who have fought breast cancer as well as remember those who have lost their battle. Honorary Race Chairs Pam Tauscher and Dawn Stevens spoke about their commitment to the cause.
Registering for the Komen Madison Race also offers residents a chance to make a direct impact on breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment in the community. The 2005 Komen National Race for the Cure® generated over $300,000.00 to fund 8 grants for programs at local institutions and organizations. Remaining funds went directly into the Komen Award and Research Grant Program and was used to fund innovative, cutting edge breast cancer research.
The National Presenting Sponsor of the 2005 Komen Race for the Cure® Series is Yoplait. Official Race Series Partners are American Airlines, Coldwater Creek®, Ford Division, Kellogg's®, New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc., Quilted Northern Ultra® and Silk Soymilk. RE/MAX and Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity co-sponsor the Komen Race for the Cure® National Series Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Program.
